Sow the Field

Identify and encourage gifts for ministry

Excellent church leaders have many gifts. Some of these gifts include:

  • Strong faith in Jesus
  • Deep care for God's people
  • Critical thinking abilities
  • Active community involvement

Encourage members to look for these gifts in others. You may also refer to the ELCA's Web site for more information on helping individuals discern their calls.

Allow future church leaders to use their gifts

Offer opportunities for future church leaders to use their gifts. Give them first-hand experience to preach, administer communion, visit those in hospitals or nursing homes, lead small groups, etc.

Train youth to be in ministry

Confirmation classes and youth groups can actively participate in leading worship, visit individuals in nursing homes, mentor younger children in Sunday School, etc.

Encourage second-career students

You may have someone in your congregation who God is calling to make a vocational change into the ministry. Find ways to encourage these people to consider if this is their call. This may include attending Ventures in Vocation or A Day in the Life at Luther Seminary!

Encourage retreats, camps and mission trips

Time away at camps, retreats and on mission trips gives people time to focus on purpose, values, mission and life commitments.
