Master of Arts student Rebecca Mehl makes the most of her time at Luther

A master's degree isn't enough for Rebecca Mehl, who splits her education between Luther Seminary and Augsburg College as part of a dual degree program at the two schools. When she completes her studies, she'll receive a Master of Arts in theology from Luther and a Master of Social Work from Augsburg.

Technically, Mehl could already be finished with her Luther studies, but she decided to take one more semester of classes.

"I really enjoy the courses and honestly felt that one year at Luther wasn't quite enough," Mehl said. Students traditionally spend three years in the dual degree program—the first year at Luther, and the final two years at Augsburg.

Mehl chose this unique program because she is passionate about addressing poverty and injustice on a global level. Currently she is in the candidacy process to become a diaconal minister and will join the ELCA's ministry of Word and Service so she can work in the field of assistance and advocacy.

"I strongly believe that Christian ministry is inseparable from service in community," she said. "It is the action taken by the Church in response to the gospel, which attests to the integrity of its message."
