James Page, II, '04,
along with four ELCA pastors (Northwest Synod of Wisconsin) will run in the Great River Relay on August 25th-26th. The relay begins in La Crosse, WI., extends up the banks of the Mississippi River, and ends in St. Paul, MN. for an overall distance of 206 miles. The 'Faster Pastors' are joining their four congregations, along with Thrivent Financial, to raise funds for 'camperships' at Luther Point Bible Camp in Grantsburg, WI. The hope is that youth will be able to attend summer camp with little expense and that financial constraints may not be a reason to hinder youth from attending the worthwhile experience of summer camp.
The 'Faster Pastors' consists of Pastor Brian Ferguson ('04, Mt. Zion in Hudson); Pastor Jim Page, II ('04, Faith in Balsam Lake); Pastor Chad Kohlmeyer ('05, Eidsvold in Bay City and Bethlehem in Ellsworth, WI.) and Jay Ticknor ('05, Bethany, Grantsburg). The other two team members are Angie Vetsch, whose husband is a current ELCA pastor and Jim Johnson, who is a member of Mt. Zion in Hudson.
This is a unique and fun way to raise funds for such a worthy cause. We hope our marathon experiences will help us in this great endeavor...some thought a fitting team name would be the 'crazy clergy!' (submitted 8/14/2006)

Ronald Marshall, '75,
has just published an essay entitled "The Sickbed Preacher: Kierkegaard on Adversity and the Awakening of Faith" in volume 17 of the International Kierkegaard Commentary, edited by Robert L. Perkins and published through Mercer University Press, Macon, GA. This essay was part of his continuing education project for the summer of 2005. On this essay, the editor, Prof. Perkins, writes: "Marshall addresses a rare theme in Kierkegaard's writings: the importance of physical illness and the prospect of imminent death in the religious and Christian consciousness. In his authorship the phenomenon of physical illness and death is so subordinated to the theme of spiritual illness and death that the foreboding of physical death may not have been properly noticed. If that is the case, Marshall goes far to address any such putative one-sidedness. He penetratingly examines the issue of physical illness and death in the context of Luther's theology, in contrast to the denial of death in contemporary pop-religion and culture, and in dialogue with the signal insights of Kierkegaard's scattered views of physical death." Robert Roth, '45,
has published a novel "Freedom at Last" Wipf and Stock, Eugene, Oregon, 2007. This is a story about the birth of a new India through their struggle for independence, 1947-1948. IT is a human interest tale in which characters under duress become vehicles for significant social and political comment. Offering more than political commentary or local color, however, "Freedom at Last" reveals the irony of small-town life in uncertain times. Brimming with compelling characters, this novel brings readers close to ambiguities in both missionary activity and political empire. Dr. Roth has also recently published a collection of essay on revelation titled "Divine Disclosure," or licorice from the box of God. (submitted 4/4/2007)
