2012 Alum in Residence: Kathy Valan, '96
While on campus Valan will preach during chapel, visit classes and be available for conversations with students.
Highlights of the week:
- Monday, 11 a.m., Valan to preach in chapel
- Wednesday, 9 .m., Valan to meet with Women Leading ministry group (meet in the coffee shop)
- Conversations with students each day during the lunch hour

About Pastor Valan
Kathy Valan is serving in her 29th year of ministry to the sister cities of Fargo, N.D., and Moorhead, Minn. Her early years were given to strengthening and encouraging youth in two Moorhead congregations. She then accepted a call to serve for six years as a religion teacher and chaplain at Oak Grove Lutheran High School in Fargo. It was during this time that she and her husband began their studies at Luther Seminary, becoming what Dr. James Boyce described as “the first distance learning students.” Kathy was ordained in 1996, and is currently in her 15th year at Christ the King in Moorhead.
Kathy lives on a family farm near Moorhead with her husband Matt where they raised their three children, who have since flown the nest. Her brood now includes two little "cowboy" grandsons, who love to come and visit grandma’s ”far-away-farm." She remains ever passionate about life, especially God’s creation. Kathy counts her time spent raising flowers, trees and horses among her treasured, holy moments.
