| A shipping path known as the diolkos was built across the isthmus of Corinth in the 6th century BC. A movable wooden platform ran in grooves along the pathway, and was used to haul goods across the isthmus. The grooves, which are about four feet apart, can be seen in the photo. Smaller boats could be taken across the isthmus on the pathway. The cargo from larger vessels was unloaded and transported by land, while the ship and crew made the more dangerous sea journey around the southern tip of Greece. |
