Marketplace

Corinth: There were many shops in the central marketplace at Corinth. One of the stalls is shown here. Goods from many parts of the world were bought and sold in the city. Local produce, including meats, were sold in the city's market. Corinthian Christians faced difficult decisions about using the market, since the meat that was sold here came from the sacrifices in the city's temples. Writing to the Corinthians, Paul urged that Christians not eat this meat if it would create difficulties for others. At the same time, Christians did not need to identify the source of every piece of meat before eating it (1 Cor 8:1-13; 10:25-33).
