Philippi: In the first century B.C., Mark Anthony and Octavian (later called Caesar Augustus) defeated the forces of Brutus and Cassius on the plains near Philippi. Afterward, the victors had veterans and Italians settle in Philippi, making it a Roman colony (Acts 16:12). Latin was commonly used in Philippi along with Greek, the dominant language of the region. The city's central area featured temples, public buildings and shops. |
