| Ephesus was one of the principal port cities in Asia. Ships brought goods from around the Mediterranean world into its harbor. The Roman governor assigned to Asia arrived by ship at Ephesus, giving the city the honor of greeting the new emissary of Rome. The street at the right of the picture led to the waterfront. In that vicinity were warehouses and a bath-gymnasium complex. | ||||
