Roman Religion: The Lares

 

Lares are gods that are venerated in shrines in homes and at crossroads. In the picture above, two Lares stand beside the genius of the householder, who is making an offering. Figures of the Lares were kept in small shrines like the one in the courtyard at the right. Some think the Lares were spirits of dead family members. Others regard them as the protectors of hearth and home.
