Ministry in Context

Director's Word

It is with great joy and anticipation that we welcome David Scherer as the new Christian Public Leader Coordinator and Karen Gieseke as our new Contextual Learning Associate.

David Scherer is a 2015 Luther Seminary graduate with an M.A. in Congregational Missional Leadership and an urban ministry developer with more than fifteen years of local experience. In this half-time position, David will coordinate ministry placements and the facilitation of the Christian Public Leader courses. We welcomed

Welcome, Dave!

My name is David Scherer and I am the new Christian Public Leader Coordinator here at Luther. I graduated last spring from Luther with an M.A. in Congregational Mission and Leadership. I have an amazing wife named Carolyn and two beautiful kids: Matthew (4) and Thomas (2). I come from six generations of Lutheran pastors - don’t hold it against me. My upbringing was far from the usual former pastor’s kid.

I was raised by a “New Age” mom, said a Sanskrit chant at the dinner

Welcome, Karen!

"When was the last time you did something for the first time?" Currently my days are filled with “first time” experiences as I begin my new call at Luther Seminary as Contextual Learning Associate. And I am thrilled! My “first time” experiences are varied, ranging from learning how the office copier works to the details of the Internship Handbook.

As I’m reading the Handbook, I am very aware that each intern at Luther Seminary encounters “first time” experiences

Goodbye from Julie and Steve

An era is ending. The time of using “deployed” staff in Contextual Learning is over as of August 31. For nearly 10 years, Steve McKinley and Julie Josund have been serving as deployed staff for Region 3 (Steve) and Region 1 (Julie). We worked and lived in those Regions for the purpose of knowing the people and congregations of those locations and being readily able to assist as needed.

The model is changing, and you will read about the new staffing plans elsewhere in this newsletter.

Visit Our New Office Space

Contextual Learning has moved! Please come by to visit us in our new office space. We are in Northwestern Hall, Suite 110-E. We're just down the hall from the Writing Center, International Student and Scholar Affairs, Global Mission Institute, and the Business Office. We look forward to seeing you around campus this new school year!

Pray and Break Bread With Us

Welcome to Pray and Break Bread for a new year! My name is Katherine Parent, and I'm excited to share about a great new year of urban and multicultural faith and justice trips. Pray and Break Bread is a series of off-campus events that bring Luther Seminary students, staff and faculty out into the community to learn from our diverse neighbors of faith. This year, there will be even more Pray and Break Bread than last year - we're planning eight exciting opportunities.
