Worship is cancelled, it's the intern's fault, and it is a good thing!
On Sunday, May 22, Bethany Lutheran Church, Cherry Hill Village, Colorado, is canceling two of its worship services in order to provide members and guests with a service opportunity. If someone shows up to worship at the usual 8:00 or 9:00 a.m. worship hours, they may find the building empty. A sign will say that worship is cancelled at these times and that the congregation has joined the service in the neighborhoods of the community.
"Be the Blessing Day!" is Intern Jessica Harris Daum's internship project. Jessica came up with the idea for this day because she wanted to help the congregation grow in its ability to "reach out and touch someone."
Supervisor Pastor Ron Glusenkamp stated, "We want to be the hands of God. We want to help people because that's what Jesus has called us to do."
On "Be the Blessing Day," Bethany will be let loose in Denver. More than 600 people have already signed up to serve on this day in more than 20 partner sites, which will offer opportunities for persons of all ages. Among the partner sites are Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity, Sky Ranch, and Lutheran Family Services. The undertaking is one step in the fulfillment of the congregation's theme for the year, "Blessed to be a Blessing."
Just to help people along with the concept of blessing and build excitement for the event, Intern Jessica prepared a video, accessible on You Tube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3M4fKz4eew
