Horizon Internships

Explore domestic and international options

Each year the ELCA chooses students from the eight seminaries to participate in domestic ministries through the Domestic Horizon Internship program. Students interested in such internships apply through the ELCA, with assistance and oversight provided by Contextual Learning.

Students’ application process

  • Attend internship information sessions in the fall semester.
  • Please complete the Domestic Horizon Internship application. Email that document to contextuallearning@luthersem.edu in October.
  • In the meantime, complete the Luther Seminary Internship Application.
  • Once Contextual Learning has received all both applications, selected candidates will be invited to interview with the Director of Contextual Learning (Rev. Tim Coltvet) and one additional Luther Seminary faculty or staff member. These interviews take place in November.
  • After your successful interview process, Contextual Learning will forward your application materials and interview results to the ELCA Congregational and Synodical Mission (ELCA CSM) unit in Chicago in December.
  • Decisions regarding Domestic Horizon Internships are made in collaboration with the ELCA CSM staff and all eight ELCA seminaries. Placement decisions are made prior to Luther Seminary’s Internship placement process in March.

Visit the Contextual Learning office in November to review Domestic Horizon options. Sorry, these options cannot be posted online.
