Congregation Description:Peace Lutheran Church was founded in 1909 by German Russian immigrants. In the 1970s the congregation opened its doors to the diverse Hilltop community, and an African American assistant pastor came on staff, resulting in a loss of membership for awhile. Since then, the congregation has been ethnically diverse with a significant African American presence. The Hilltop neighborhood is low and mixed income, ethnically and socioeconomically diverse. Thirty years ago, Peace began partnering with local congregations to provide free weekday evening meals for the community two months of the year and continues this ministry today. In 2001, this small congregation birthed a social ministry called Peace Community Center (www.peacetacoma.org, annual budget almost $1 million) and built a $1.5 million facility addition to provide tutoring and mentoring, skills and support, for Hilltop children and youth to reach their God-given potential. Worship is on Sundays at 8:30 and 11 am, Sunday School for all ages at 9:45 am, Wednesday evenings is faith night with a children's faith enrichment program, youth group, and adult Bible study. Small groups, feeding program, tutoring & mentoring, and advocacy are some ministries. The congregation is very active in the Hilltop neighborhood, in Conversations Around Race in Tacoma, in Bread for the World, and supports missionaries on an African Island. Major issues facing the congregation include poverty, homelessness, housing, living wage jobs, domestic violence, parenting, and many more.

Autobiography:I grew up in Ohio, graduated from Wittenberg University, have a master's degree in math from University of Michigan, worked 2 years in business consulting in Chicago, attended Luther Seminary, served first call in Olympia at Good Shepherd, and am now in my second call at Peace in Tacoma. I have a heart from diverse urban ministry, bridging people and cultures, and helping people discover their gifts and serve God in community. I'm reading alot about congregations involved in community development these day. I participate in ecumenical pastors' groups, serve on the Peace Community Center Board, and look for connections to improve affordable housing in Tacoma. I enjoy backpacking, camping, jogging, racquetball, movies, traveling outside the United States.
