About Mid-Winter Convocation
As Christians we are called to serve
God’s creation. We are invited to look beyond ourselves into the
world God continues to create. As God's creation grows, adapts
and suffers natural disasters, we are reminded that God’s work
in the world holds out hope for new possibilities and
experiences.
When God rescued the Israelites from
Egypt and gave them the 10 Commandments, God set Israel apart,
calling them to counter-cultural resistance of all oppression.
What, our speakers will ask, are the "pharaohs" we face today,
and how are we challenged to put the good of neighbor and world
above our own interests? Like the Israelites, we too are called
to recognize ourselves as "blessed to be a blessing."
We hope you will join us, Jan. 14-16, as
we engage scripture for the sake of the world.
Mid-Winter Convocation offers
theological enrichment for lay and ordained ministry leaders and
the Christian community at large. A national conference,
the Convocation features scholars and teachers from Luther Seminary
and around the world.

What does it mean to read the Bible "for the sake of the world?"
How might the biblical word give shape to Christian life?
These
questions were addressed by two preeminent Old Testament
scholars, Dr. Walter Brueggemann and Dr. Terry Fretheim as they
explored the theme of the 2009 Mid-Winter Convocation, Engaging
Scripture for the Sake of the World.

Challenge Question
Last year, we challenged you to engage scripture in new ways
in your congregation’s daily life. What has worked? What
has not?
Ideas will be discussed Friday morning at the Book of Faith
breakfast and at the panel discussion.
