Items to know for Test #2

 

 

Test#2 will consist entirely of translating Hebrew sentences into English.  All will be sentence, no phrases.  The first two word lists (minus the three inseparable prepositions) will be distributed, and all of the vocabulary will come from those lists or from the items listed below.  The sentences will be somewhat more complicated than sentences you have seen before. 

 

 

1. The meaning and various spellings of the definite article

            A. Recognize the change of spelling which occurs on the first three words on top of p.26.

 

2. The various meaning and forms of the three inseparable prepositions - :l :K :B (le, be, ke)

            A. Recognize when the word with the preposition is definite and when it is not so that you might translate correctly.

 

3. The forms the preposition }im (min)

            A. The meaning of this preposition as “from”

 

4. Recognition and translation of the conjunction w (v)

 

5. The gender and number endings - hf , {yi , tO  [ {iya ]  ( aµh, iĆm, oĆth)

 

6. The irregular plurals listed on pp.38-39 many of which are words from list one.  Note particularly the plurals of man, woman, land, city, son, and daughter.

 

7. The different uses of the adjective - attributive and predicative.

A. Be able to translate adjectives appropriately.

 

8. The translation and uses of the independent personal pronouns.

 

9. The translation and uses of the demonstratives

            A. The attributive use as demonstrative adjectives

            B. The predicative use as demonstrative pronouns

 

10. A creative sense of when and where to supply some form of the verb “to be.”
