Janzen, J. Gerald. “On the Most Important Word in the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4-5),”

Vetus Testamentum 37:3 (1987), 280-300.

A very interesting article claiming that “one” is the correct translation of dfxe).

Janzen says it is the oneness of God’s action, intent, history, and denotes God’s integrity.

McBride, S. Dean. “The Yoke of the Kingdom: An Exposition of Deuteronomy 6:4-5,”

Interpretation 27(1973), 273-306.

Equally interesting argument for the translation “alone.”  McBride argues for v4 as a loyalty
oath or confession.  Argues from the context of Deuteronomy.  Also marvelous on v.5.

Miller, Patrick. “The Most Important Word: The Yoke of the Kingdom,”

Illiff Review (1984), 17-29.

Ties the shema to the first commandment.
