From Repentance to Joy: Singing the Faith, Oct. 25

The Luther Seminary community once again looks forward to the annual Singing the Faith hymn sing. This year's dinner and worship service will be held, as in past years, on Reformation Sunday, Oct. 25, in the Luther Seminary Olson Campus Center.

Founded in the choral tradition of St. Olaf College, Magnum Chorum will perform under the direction of Chris Aspaas. The hymns performed will highlight this year's theme, focusing on the transition from repentance to joy. Martin Luther's writings about confession and forgiveness in the Catechism inform both the theme and the music selection.

Notably, the program will premiere a hymn written by Gracia Grindal, professor of rhetoric. The hymn is part of a finished work that ultimately includes hymns on all of the texts in the Revised Common Lectionary. A hymn written by Danish composer Lisbeth Smedegaard Andersen and translated by Grindal will also be featured.

Grindal and Andersen have a unique connection, which will make this year's festival especially enjoyable. During the 1994 Reformation Festival, Grindal preached a sermon on Psalm 90 as part of an anniversary service held in Old Muskego Church. Andersen was among the congregation members that day. She was so inspired by Grindal's sermon that she wrote a hymn on Psalm 90 entitled "Igaar var hvedens." The hymn became so popular in Denmark over the years that it was recently featured in the newest Danish hymnal.

Andersen's respect of Grindal's work is clearly mutual. Grindal dedicated her second book, "A Treasury of Faith," to Andersen. Additionally, she wrote a chapter on Andersen's work in her forthcoming book on women hymn writers in Scandinavia and recently traveled to Poland to give a presentation on writing Danish hymns in English.

As these two women continue to work together to produce wonderful art written in both English and Danish, the old adage seems to hold true: music truly is the universal language.

A free-will offering will be taken to benefit the Luther Seminary FRIENDS Endowed Scholarship Fund for seminary students. Dinner tickets are $15 per person and the event is open to the public. Advance reservations are required by Oct. 21.
