Mission and the Art of Witness
There are few better mediums for witness today than art. Art can capture the imagination of its admirers in powerful ways that even preachers might find hard to emulate. Luther Seminary has also discovered the power of art on its campus to shape, mold and educate future missional leaders. The seminary owns 500 fine art pieces in addition to the 3,000 artifacts in the Mission Heritage Collection. This art is rotated regularly throughout our buildings on campus in order to make a strong spiritual impact on the community. These art pieces preach and teach every day. They tell missionary stories from China; they witness to other cultures from Africa to Asia who have responded to the gospel; and they share the narratives of faithful, courageous witnesses right here in our own backyard.
Given the power and scope of these art works, it was with great excitement that Luther Seminary agreed to become the permanent home for the "prodigal collection" from Jerry Evenrud, a longtime donor to the seminary. Evenrud felt Luther Seminary would provide the proper setting and backdrop to make this collection more visible both to future leaders of the church and the wider community. The gift of his collection also provides the seminary with an important legacy of connecting our mission with Luke's parable.
A new permanent gallery of Prodigal Son art has now been organized and open in Northwestern Hall. You are welcome to come and witness the art at any time. In fact, bring your Bible study group or your catechism class. Let the pictures tell the old, old story in fresh new ways. We expect that the witness of this collection—like the parable itself—will only grow and deepen as the images influence generation after generation of church leaders. Come and see the art of witness at Luther.
