As I look forward to our upcoming commencement, I feel a sense of gratitude and thankfulness to God while watching this class prepare to graduate.
This year, 155 students will participate in our 2015 graduation ceremonies on May 17.
The students who graduate this year have been exposed to a wide range of theological studies, thought and discussion throughout their years of study. Over the course of their education, they have prepared for a lifetime of service to others, whether that comes through active ministry to a congregation or by serving their communities in other ways.
The members of this year’s graduating class have also steadfastly pursued their education during a challenging and sometimes tumultuous time for our institution.
As this group of students began their seminary education, it was a period of uncertainty and change for both Luther Seminary itself, and for all the individuals who work and study here.
Today, Luther Seminary is in a much better place and we’ve learned valuable lessons about the power of resiliency.
Navigating through difficulties when a clear path isn’t immediately apparent is a life skill that serves each of us well. Resiliency is about maintaining a robust spiritual discipline and keeping our perspective in situations that are uncertain, all while continuing in a dedicated, thoughtful way to pursue the path to which God has called us.
I believe that each of our students has found within themselves the capacity to forge ahead, even when the way seems unclear, trusting in God to guide their steps. This is also a lesson they can share with others in the future, thereby helping us spread the message of trust and faith that is a core value in our spiritual lives.
I, along with the other staff and faculty at the seminary, offer this year’s graduating class our warmest congratulations and heartfelt prayers as they take their first steps along their own path.

I would also like to welcome Heidi Droegemueller to Luther Seminary as our new vice president of seminary relations. She started her new position on May 4. Heidi brings many gifts to Luther Seminary and her interactions with our generous donors and friends will be invaluable in supporting the important work the seminary undertakes. We are grateful to have her here.
