This year’s Rethinking event was titled Rethinking Sunday Morning: Better Questions, Bolder Experiments and took place at Luther Seminary from July 27-29. Participants gathered to discuss the changing dynamics of Sunday morning church services. They questioned why many are no longer choosing to attend church on Sunday mornings and what God might be up to in this growing trend.
Participants had the opportunity to hear from 10 different experts on the challenges of Sunday morning. Theresa Cho, co-pastor of St. John’s Presbyterian Church in San Francisco, spoke about the excitement and challenges of making changes in worship. Rich Melheim, founder of Faith Inkubators Foundation, spoke about the painful yet rewarding challenges of replacing traditional Sunday school with intergenerational events. Kathryn Schifferdecker, assistant professor of Old Testament at Luther Seminary, spoke about her experiences church shopping as a seminary professor and the resulting lessons she learned about hospitality.
Participants had the opportunity to worship and enjoy meals together. After each lecture, participants also joined in reflection and conversation sessions furthering the discussions around each lecture.
