Three pastors who have experience growing their congregations through changing times will be honored for their faithful and wise pastoral leadership.
The Faithfulness in Ministry Cross Awards for 2013 will be presented during Mid-Winter Convocation on Wednesday, Feb. 6, during worship at 11 a.m., in Luther Seminary's Chapel of the Incarnation.
Pastor Paul H. Christenson, '59, is known for his infectious spirit, talent and energy in proclaiming the Gospel and leading his congregations to connect with their context and reach out to those around them. He was enthusiastically nominated by First Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa, where he served from 1972-1987.
Pastor J. David Whelan, '95, of Peace Lutheran Church in Menomonie, Wis., led his congregation through a time of staff transition and reduced budget to emerge into a growing and service oriented congregation. By leading his congregation in a new ministry directions, the people of Peace Lutheran see a new calling to serve their community.
Pastor Debra Samuelson, '83, led Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Minneapolis, Minn. through a time of transition and uncertainty, leading its people to reach out to the neighborhood in new ways, witnessing to youth and families, with hope and joy. The people of Good Shepherd have created a supportive bond with several Ethiopian congregations here and in Africa.
