Frieder Ludwig
Associate Professor of Mission & World Christianity

Frieder Ludwig began as associate professor of mission and world Christianity in September 2002. Before joining the Luther Seminary faculty, Ludwig served as substitute chair of the church history department at the Ludwig Maximilian's University of Munich, Germany.

"Dr. Ludwig brings both extensive research and publishing in the history of theology of mission and a breadth of experience in Christianity worldwide," said Dr. Marc Kolden, Luther Seminary academic dean. At Luther Seminary Ludwig will teach courses in Christian mission theology and mission history, with special attention to the spread of Christianity in Africa.

Ludwig studied theology, missiology and history at Heidelberg University and the University of Birmingham, with shorter stays in Ghana and at Oxford and Yale universities. He has doctorates in history and theology from Heidelberg. He has extensively researched church and mission in Tanzania, Nigeria and India. He has also published three major books, one of which has been translated into English—Church and State in Tanzania: Aspects of a Changing Relationship, 1961-1994.

Ludwig has taught at Bayreuth University and Munich University in Germany and at Jos University in Nigeria. While in Munich, he conducted research on the ecumenical movement in Africa and Asia. His studies also focused on ecumenical movements in India and Nigeria between 1890 and 1947. 

Three years ago, Ludwig began to research Christian-Muslim relations among Nigerians, cooperating with Dr. Umar Danfulani of Jos University. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Bonn, Germany, funded the project. Ludwig is a member of the German Society of Missiology, the German Association for the History of Religion, the African Association for the Study of Religion and serves on the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Religion in Africa.
