Loan Players

School Post-Secondary institution that determines your eligibility for a subsidized and/or unsubsidized Stafford loan and certifies your application.
Lender Bank, Credit union, or other financial institution that provides the money when you take out a loan.
Federal Government The federal government offers Federal Stafford and Plus loans as part of the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) and makes the rules and regulations that govern the FFELP program. The federal government charges a 3% origination fee to process the loan.
Guarantee Agency A state agency or non-profit institution that insures student loans for the lenders and helps administer the Federal Family Loan Program for the federal government. The guarantee agency may charge up to a 1% guarantee fee.
Secondary Market Institution that buys student loans from originating lender, thereby freeing up money for the lenders to make loans to additional students.
Servicer Organization that administers and collects loans on behalf of the holder of the loan.
