Your Support Expands Horizons!
Greetings in the name of our Savior, Jesus the Christ.
As I write this, your Global Mission Institute is preparing to receive 11 new international students for study at Luther Seminary. Through your support and prayers, our churches and seminary receive an incalculable benefit: our horizons are expanded to understand and participate in the work of the Holy Spirit throughout the world. The Gospel is brought to us in the fullness of its expression through the presence of these brothers and sisters in Christ. Please join me in praying that these students will thrive here, and please seek these students out when you are on campus and learn from them. Meanwhile, this issue of Global Vision will introduce you to Toshi Longkumer,
one of our Asian students, as well as the intriguing experiences of one of our domestic Luther students on a study visit this summer to Myanmar,
a direct result of our Visiting Schiotz Professorship.
We also welcome Dr. Paul Chung to our faculty as the new associate professor of mission and world
Christianity. Dr. Chung brings vast experience and perspectives on Asian and Lutheran Theology that will serve to enrich us as the years go by. Welcome to the Chungs!
I would also like to draw special attention to our calendar of events, especially the Burgess Lecture on Global Mission this year. We are honored to have Rev. Dr. S. Mark Heim of Andover Newton Theological School as our speaker. He is very well-known for his innovative and provocative thinking about the plurality of religious world views and truth—claims with which Christian mission engages today. Plan to join us for this free lecture after chapel on Oct. 14, 2009. It will also be Web cast and archived at www.luthersem.edu/lectures/burgess. Rev. Dr. Heim will help us begin thinking about how we might be in effective and faithful Christian mission while "being at home with pluralism."
