2009 Visiting Schiotz Professor Announced

by Shelley Cunningham ('98)

Dr. Nalini Arles, professor at the United Theological College (UTC) in Bangalore, India, has been named the 2009 Schiotz Visiting Professor at Luther Seminary. Arles will arrive on campus in January.

Arles comes to Luther Seminary with 14 years of experience as professor of pastoral counseling at UTC, which is the premier school of Christian theology in India.

While at Luther Seminary, Dr. Arles will speak, teach and conduct research. She is particularly interested in the role and function of pastoral care as it functions in the world's various "Truth and Reconciliation" processes. She also has extensively explored the intersection between modern pastoral counseling and traditional spiritual practices and authority roles in the Indian context.

Arles earned her M.Th. degree from the University of Aberdeen and her Ph.D. degree from the University of
Edinburgh, Scotland. She will be available to speak in congregations while she is at Luther.
