The Ph.D. in Systematic Theology at Luther Seminary prepares students for research, teaching and leadership at the forefront of Christian thought. Students from across the globe work together with outstanding faculty in a serious academic environment that is also a Christian community. Our Ph.D. is explicitly based upon rigorous critical thinking grounded in Christian faith. Thus the program takes its place as part of the missional and confessional character of the seminary. We center ourselves theologically within the confessional heritage of the Reformation, with a global, cross-cultural, interdisciplinary and ecumenical breadth.
Doctoral students work closely with a large, diverse and internationally recognized faculty in systematic theology. Areas of particular research interest by faculty include:
- Contemporary Theology and Theologians
- Philosophical Theology
- Liberation Theology and Public Theology
- Science and Theology
- Congregations and Ecclesiology
- Missional Theology and World Christianity
- Lutheran Theology
The program aims to nourish scholarly conversation, research and teaching for the sake of the Church and its mission.
