Martin Junge has served as General Secretary of the Lutheran World Federation since 2010. The former president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chile (1996-2000), he is the first Latin American to hold the office of General Secretary. After his theological studies at the University of Göttingen and his ordination in 1989, Pastor Junge served parishes in Chile and was  LWF Area Secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean in the Department for Mission and Development from 2000 until 2010.

Junge’s Word & World Lecture anticipates the 500th anniversary of the Reformation (2017). He will explore the relationship between reformation and culture.

The Lutheran Reformation is today a “global citizen.” It has moved beyond Germany, where it originated, and beyond the North-Atlantic contexts in which it was strongly represented during the last centuries. How shall we approach the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in view of this new reality? How shall we identify and bring into dialogue the new insights that have emerged by the inculturation of churches of the Reformation in different world contexts? How will the anniversary build on the ecumenical processes and milestones of recent decades? Does the Lutheran Reformation offer a particular perspective that could contribute towards dialogue and cooperation among different faiths?

On the basis of concrete examples of inculturation of the Lutheran Reformation and with a particular focus on examples from the Global South, the Word & World lecture will offer perspectives for the ongoing development of theological discourse and practice rooted in Reformation.

The Word & World lectures focus on topics important to Christian ministry in today's world. The lectures are sponsored by Word & World, a scholarly theological journal published by Luther Seminary.
