Building walls

Last week marked the end of the demolition and start of building walls for the new elevator, followed quickly by rebuilding to put the building back in usable order. This next phase will be less noise and less debris, but you will occasionally notice shorter times of drilling and hammering.

Cutting out the shaft

This week has been all about continuing to make room for the elevator shaft. This first picture is of the hole cut out between the roof and the 3rd floor ceiling. You can see the ceiling tiles, with the short wall above supporting the wood sheets that are temporarily keeping the elements out. The picture below shows another view of this hole as well as the hole in the floor connecting down to the 2nd floor.

Digging the elevator pit

With temporary barriers erected and wall demolition completed, it's time to start building the new elevator shaft. At the basement level, they had to dig down another four feet for the elevator pit. Today they are putting cinder blocks in place to start building what will become the floor supports around the elevator shaft.

Considerable less privacy in the 2nd floor restroom (below) but new walls will be constructed toward the end!
