Thesis Templates

Templates have been created to work in conjunction with MS Word and The Shortcut. Their purpose is to allow you to concentrate on writing your thesis and not have to worry about spacing, page numbers, or other style details.

Using Templates

Campus Lab & Library Computers

All lab and library computers already have thesis templates in the right folder. Open Word, New My Templates.

Your Home Computer or Laptop

Download each template to your personal computer by right clicking on the hyperlink. Choose "Save Link As." When the dialog box appears, select the appropriate path:

  • Word 2003/2007 with Windows 2000/XP:
The Templates folder default location is: C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

  • Word 2003/2007 with Windows Vista:
The Templates folder default location is: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

  • Alternatively, you can create a folder on your desktop, download the templates to that folder and open them from there each time.

Note: The AppData folder is a hidden folder, if you do not see it, go to Tools/Folder Options/View and under Advanced Settings, choosing "Show Hidden Files and Folders." If you do not see the menu bar hold ALT to see the Tools Menu.

Working with Thesis Templates

Open Word, go to New My Templates, select a template and open it. If you have downloaded the templates directly to a folder on your desktop, simply open the folder and double click the template you'd like to use.

Save and name the file. Develop a workable naming process for your files. Keep track of all versions and revisions as you write your thesis.

Thesis Templates Help offers specific instructions & tips on how to apply styles, and which ones to use.

Backing Up Your Thesis

Make sure that you have extra copies of your thesis. Back it up EACH time you work on it. Use your space on the Campus H: drive (This is backed up 2 times/day by the Campus network wizards.) and/or keep an extra copy on a flash drive.
