The Center for Writing and Research at Luther Seminary is a new service dedicated to providing the seminary community with a timely, relevant resource for improving writing from across the curriculum. By meeting with a writing professional in a one-on-one setting, writers can get specific answers to the questions they are facing in the writing process as well as identify and address points for improvement in their own writing.

You have many options for accessing our services:

Consultations are available at 45-minute intervals. Students are not required to schedule an appointment to meet with a consultant, but priority will be given to those students who have scheduled appointments in advance. Students may schedule up to two appointments per week, and may drop by as often as they like; standing weekly appointments are also available. Those who are five-minutes late for an appointment risk having their session given to those waiting, and repeated failure to attend scheduled appointments may result in revocation of scheduling privileges. Students and consultants are at all times accountable to the policies and procedures of Luther Seminary.

 Writing consultants will:

  • Help the student to determine what grammatical or mechanical errors are present and teach the student to find and correct these on their own.
  • Suggest ways to improve the thesis, organization and content of a text.
  • Explain how to cite according to format (Chicago, APA, MLA, etc.).
  • Recommend ways to get unstuck at any stage in the writing process.
  • Work with students on any form of writing (including electronic content, reflective writing, resumes, etc.).
  • Discuss how to use sources appropriately in a text.
  • Assist non-native students.
  • Refer the student to additional resources which may be helpful.

 Writing consultants will not:

  • Predict the final grade or comments the instructor will assign to a paper.
  • Write texts—or portions of texts—for the student.
  • Consult on exams without written permission by the instructor as indicated on the exam or in the course syllabus.
  • Discuss students’ work (with the student or others) outside of the consultation setting.
  • Critique an instructor’s assignment.
  • Copyedit.
