Responding to a growing need for and interest in lay congregational leadership, many ELCA synods provide lay schools of ministry or theology within their synods that offer certificates after a period of training to lay people who wish to participate more fully in their congregations and in their daily lives. In partnership with the synods of the ELCA of Northeastern, Northwestern and Southeastern Minnesota; Eastern and Western North Dakota; and South Dakota, Luther Seminary offers programs twice a year that fulfill some of the requirements for these particular synods.
TOPICS for the week:
Practical Preaching: Strategies for Sermon Preparation
Preparing a sermon is one of the most important aspects of pastoral ministry. So what are the essentials when it comes to preaching? This seminar will focus on the basics of sermon preparation, including meaningful biblical study, lectionary tools and resources, sermon design, preaching law and gospel, delivery and how to write for the ear.
The Gospel of Matthew
This is a study of the Gospel of Matthew with special attention to the way it portrays Jesus and to the way it understands mission and making disciples. As we talk about preaching Matthew in the church today, the course will engage representative texts from Matthew that appear in the Revised Common Lectionary, Year A.
Responding Pastorally to Current Trends in Rural Communities
The class will offer participants practical pastoral resources for responding to current concerns of rural communities. Specifically the class will focus on the current economic crisis, natural disasters and returning military personnel, however, other timely topics may also be addressed. In addition to lecture time on these topics the class will include time for discussion as well as time for sharing thoughts, ideas or experiences.
