New Seminary Pastor Appointed

Luther Seminary has appointed a new seminary pastor, the Rev. Dr. John Martin Mann. Mann has over 30 years of pastoral experience including campus ministry and launching two outreach ministries – Iglesia Luterana La Trinidad and Red Door Outreach Mission, both in Canton, Ohio.

"The importance of this seminary pastor position for the life and well-being of the whole Luther Seminary community became very clear during the search process," said Dr. Richard H. Bliese, Luther Seminary president. "This position has been redesigned to empower the seminary pastor to make a bigger impact on the community's life. The whole search committee was excited about what John Mann will bring to both this position and to this community. He brings some powerful gifts, experience and training to this position. He is an academic, a pastor, an expert in systems, an experienced leader and, not least, a good listener. He is just what we need as a pastor who can stand at the center of this diverse community. We can't wait to get him here on campus."

"The committee was impressed by Pastor Mann's ability to listen in a deep and profound manner," said the Rev. Patricia Lull, Dean of Students and chair of the search committee. "He made all of our conversations richer and more insightful. We found him very approachable and sense that others will have that immediate impression, too. In his first year he will get many of us talking to each other. I suspect we will become better listeners, too."

Mann is excited about the possibilities that this new role will bring. "As one who has lived most of my ministry in the church and academy, I eagerly await involvement with a seminary community committed to confessional mission development as the future of the church in the 21st century."

A graduate of Clarion State College, Clarion, Penn., Mann earned his Master of Divinity degree and Master of Theology degrees from Duke Divinity School in 1970 and 1973 respectively. His first call as an ordained pastor was to First Lutheran Church/Edinboro State College where he served as a pastor and Lutheran campus minister. Mann earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from The Ohio Theological Consortium and Hamma Divinity School in 1976. (Thesis title:  The Training of Lay Pastoral Assistants in Campus Ministry Through the Use of the Clinical Pastoral Education Model.")

In addition to his distinguished pastoral career, Mann has been an active leader in synod and community committees and organizations and is the founding president of UrbanArk Incorporated, an organization designed to do urban ministry including food, clothing, shelter and other needs for the truly poor in the heart of the city.
