Characteristics of Online Learners
Online learners...
Are
self-directed learners
. They know what they need to learn; they decide how to learn it; and then they learn it.
Manage their time well and are
well-organized
. They set aside adequate time to study; schedule studying and class time into their schedules; and take frequent breaks to allow the material to absorb.
Have the basic skills for
finding their way around a computer
. They bookmark web pages, use search engines, enable pop ups, attach files, and compose papers in a word processing program.
Understand that there will be much more
peer-to-peer learning
involved. Everyone participates in an online class; no one is able to sit quietly in the back row.
Substantive contributions
are required and expected.
Recognize that online courses, in particular, require a shift in learning styles from a teacher-centered focus to a
learner-centered
one.
Communicate effectively with
good netiquette
. They realize they do not have the benefit of communicating with nonverbal cues – such as eye contact, hand gestures or voice inflection – and adjust their communication style accordingly.
Take
ownership of their study environments
. They have a set time and location for studying and "being in class" and do not let outside distractions get in their way for successfully completing their learning goals.
Do
Take a few minutes and reflect on these characteristics. Do they describe your learning style, or are there ways you might adapt yours to make the most out of your online learning experience?
