Schütz Conference
The Music, Life and Times of Heinrich Schütz
Feb. 20, 2010
Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minn.
Join Us for the Day ...
Join clinicians David Mennicke, Catherine Rodland, Michael Rogness, and Kathy Saltzman Romey in a conference about the life, times and music of Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672).
Plenary sessions and a variety of workshops will explore:
- The music of Henrich Schütz
- His contemporaries, repertoire and performance practice
- The impact of the Thirty Years' War
... Stay for a Concert!
The conference will conclude with a concert by the National Lutheran Choir which will perform the rarely heard Musikalische Exequien, commissioned in 1636 by Count Heinrich Posthumus von Reuss, an educated and cultivated ruler and friend/supporter of Schutz
The concert will also include a set of African-American Spirituals, born out of the horrific context of slavery, as well as David Cherwien's "Hear O Israel" for chorus, organ and percussion. Cherwien's piece embodies the song of the Jewish and Christian faiths. "Hear O Israel: The Lord our God..." depicts the tremendous tensions of the modern-day Middle East.
Conference registrants will receive a complimentary ticket to the concert.
