Employment Policies
A. Equal Employment Opportunity Policy
It is the policy of the seminary to provide equal employment opportunity in all areas of its employment practices to ensure that there is no unlawful discrimination against any applicant for employment or employee upon the grounds of age, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, marital status, or status with regard to public assistance, or any other basis protected by law. However, a background in the church or Lutheran theological training may be a bona fide occupational qualification for certain positions. Any employee who believes they have been discriminated against should contact their supervisor, department head, or the Vice President for Administration and Finance.
The seminary will make reasonable accommodations to allow qualified individuals with known disabilities to perform the essential functions of their jobs, unless doing so would create an undue hardship. This policy governs all aspects of employment, including selection, job assignment, compensation, termination and access to benefits and training. Employees who believe they need reasonable accommodations should contact their supervisor, department head, or the Vice President for Administration and Finance.
B. New Employees
As a new employee you are considered to be in training the first six months of employment. This gives both you and the seminary an opportunity to assess whether you are suitable for the position. You should receive a written evaluation of your performance from your program director or supervisor during your training period.
C. Classification of Employees
The seminary has three basic classifications of employees: full time salaried, part time salaried, and hourly. These classifications are important in determining the benefits to which you are entitled and are to be referred to when questions arise concerning vacations, holidays, absences, leaves, and other employee benefits. At the time of initial employment or upon employment changes, the seminary will inform you of your classification. The chart below outlines the classification of employment and the benefits to which each are entitled.
Part-time is defined as less than 40 hours per week. Part time salaried employees
may be granted insurance/pension coverage if they work more than 1500 hours per year.
