Vacation

As a new employee you receive vacation time based on your first full month of employment. To determine the number of vacation days available to you in the first and second calendar years of employment, find the first FULL month you were employed in the left column of the table on the following page and follow that row across to the right. You do not accrue vacation time during your first six months of employment.

For example if you were hired on February 28th you would receive 4 days of vacation to be taken between 9/1 and 12/31 of that year and 10 days vacation to be taken from 1/1 to 12/31 of your second calendar year. Or if you were hired on October 11th you would receive 0 days your first calendar year and 8 days to be taken from 5/1-12/31 of your second calendar year.

Note that you may not waive your vacation time and take payment in lieu of vacation. Any vacation not take during your vacation year normally will be lost. However, carryover of vacation will be considered on a case by case basis with the supervisor or director of your department and the payroll director.

As a salaried employee you receive your regular daily wage for every vacation day taken. As an hourly employee you receive a wage equal to your average daily wage. For example, if you generally work 5 hours a day, 5 days per week, you will be paid 5 hours for every vacation day or 50 hours per year in years 2 & 3.

If an official holiday falls within your vacation period you will not be charged a vacation day for the holiday.

If you leave the employment of the seminary either voluntarily or involuntarily, you will be paid for any earned but unused vacation.

Guidelines for Taking Vacation

Vacation time off requires one-week notice and approval by your supervisor or department head. Departmental guidelines restricting the number of employees who may take vacation at the same time or precluding the taking of vacation at particularly busy times may also apply.

Vacation does not accrue during any leave. An authorized seminary holiday which falls on a normal business day during your vacation is not counted as a vacation day. If you are hospitalized during your vacation, those days will be charged to your sick leave, if available, rather than to your vacation time.

In order to coordinate paid vacations with Family and Medical Leave, you will be required to provide enough information about the purpose of the vacation to allow a determination of whether the vacation will also qualify for Family and Medical Leave. If the paid vacation also qualifies for Family and Medical Leave, you must take both leaves simultaneously. (For more information, consult the Family and Medical Leave policy below).

All employees taking vacation must record that vacation time on the time report they submit to the immediate supervisor who then submits it to payroll.
