MOUNTAIN IRON FAITH: The Penny Processional

In 1998, Messiah's bell tower was hit by lighting and its building burned to the ground.  From the devastation came an incredible renewal of spirit, vitality and service.  With help from their insurance company, others in the community and from the generosity of its own members, they built a beautiful, serviceable new facility in a new location.  When Pastor Kristin Foster reflects on what occurred, she smiles and calls it, "A Miracle!"

In their new building, they are continuing to expand their mission of grace, mercy and service in their own immediate community and far beyond.

In the spring of 2005, they envisioned ridding themselves of their debt as soon as possible in order to devote even more of their resources in mission and outreach to the community and the globe.

I had the opportunity to be with the congregation on Commitment Sunday, May 22, when the penny processional occurred.  I love to tell this story.

A Lost Chirstmas Spirit

The following e-mail arrived in my mail box the Sat. before Christmas as I was preparing my sermon for Christmas eve. I hadn't preached on Xmas eve in 13 years. As I read the e-mail it felt as though God was speaking to me and reminding me of what is at stake in the preaching task on Christmas and Easter.

Needless to say I was moved by this young man's plea and it helped me prepare my message for the night. There are also stewardship questions to be addressed by this young man and I hope to have the opportunity to visit with him about these issues as well.

I was both humbled and touched by his e-mail as it captured for me what are I'm sure the yearnings and questions of a lot of folks who walk through the doors of our churches on a regular basis.

From the Pastor's Corner

This is article was found in the congregation newsletter.  Pastor Larson reminds the  congregation St. Paul's succinct theology for Christian giving and stewardship by making four admonitions.

He encourages the congregation in its giving by writing:
"I hope you will join us in that growth so that the mission and ministry of our congregation can also grow. As we approach the onset of our Bear Fruit Stewardship Campaign, I hope will give prayerful consideration to this question, "How much will you grow in your giving in 2003?"

Stewardship Quiz

This is a quiz that helps participants to evaluate how Christ is Lord in their lives.

Dean used it at worship as part of the sermon.  He had one of the Deacons share in the sermon how the quiz made her think again about relying on and trusting God.  A very important aspect of stewardship.

Dean hopes that the quiz will stir thinking and prayer in people about their stewardship of life and the treasures we receive from God, ie. grace, love, forgiveness,as well as the abundance of physical blessings we have.

The objectives is to encourage people to grow in their stewardship of life.

Although the results will not be known, it has stirred thinking.

Each year, as she considers her annual pledge to her church, a visitor arrives on her doorstep and changes Edythe's approach to stewardship. After three years, she realizes that her gift is not an obligation but is an expression of love.

Living on Purpose -- A Lent Meditation
"Our Walk With God"

Different members of the congregation were invited to speak about their whole life mission statement during the mid-week Lent services.  This is one example.

In Kristine Houtman's Lent Meditation she reveals how she and her husband participated in a walk with God in the construction of their faith statement

Their Faith Mission Statement is:

To seek God and serve others.
To live and lovely generously.
To celebrate the beauty of God's creation.
Waiting. Hoping. Choosing Joy.
