Practicing Our Faith: Household Economics
Good economic practice - positive ways of exchanging goods and services - is about the well-being, the livelihood, of the whole household. In the face of great economic and environmental challenges, the Christian practice of household economics calls on us to manage our private homes for the well-being and livelihood of the small planet home we all share.

Spending on Happiness
Spending on Happiness
Money can't buy you love but it can buy happiness—as long as it's money for someone else. New research by Harvard Business School professor Michael I. Norton and colleagues Elizabeth W. Dunn and Lara B. Aknin, described in the journal Science, looks into how and why spending money on others promotes happiness. Norton explains more in this Q&A. How much money people earn is less important for their happiness than how they choose to spend it. Although people believe that having money leads to happiness, new research suggests they are happier if at least some of the money is given to others.

100 Thing Challenge
The 100 Thing Challenge is my little way to personalize my efforts to fight consumerism.
What's behind it? My belief that material possessions can be good when they serve a greater purpose than possession alone. We should make better use of our things than just owning them. My hope is that by living a year with 100 personal things, I'll be able to show that an average American guy does not need tons of stuff to live the good life. And also I hope to shed some light on the nature of consumerism in our culture. Thanks for following along!

The Liturgy of Abundance; the Myth of Scarcity
Walter Brueggemann's insights into the biblical story create an opportunity for a major shift in the way stewardship is approached. This article will inspire the reader. It deserves to be shared, read, studied and preached.
We live under the myth of scarcity. The truth is, God abundantly blesses all creation.
"The creation is infused with the Creator's generosity, and we can find practices, procedures and institutions that allow that generosity to work. Like the rich young man in Mark 10, we all have many possessions. Sharing our abundance may, as Jesus says, be impossible for mortals, but nothing is impossible for God." -- Walter Bruggemann

The National Catholic Conference For Total Stewardship
The CHRISTIAN CELEBRATION OF LIFE (CCL) is a phrase coined by the National Catholic Conference for Total Stewardship in 1985. It synthesizes the rich body of teachings of Jesus in the Bible and in the Church. Combined into a unique formation process, called the CHRISTIAN CELEBRATION OF LIFE, the teachings provide spiritual development of God's People for evangelization in parishes, local churches and the world. The process fulfills exactly what John Paul II calls for in his apostolic exhortation, Christifideles Laici, the "Lay Faithful of Christ."

How much should we ask people to give?
This article is the question: "How do we decide how much to ask for?
Determining the right "ask" is critical: you don't want it to be so high that it seems frivolous, but it needs to be high enough to fulfil your vision and encourage your members to grow in their giving.
There is a little math involved in finding an "ask" that satisfies these two constraints. My purpose is to offer some simple tools to come up with an "ask" for your congregation."

CONTENTS
Session 1: Starts With Receiving
Session 2: Not Counting the Cost
Session 3: The Great Struggle Between Generosity and Greed
Session 4: The Spiritual Power of Generosity
This study will work best in a small group of five to 12 people. Such a group can focus on the Scripture texts and on sharing their own personal experiences. While the content of these sessions is important, the pro¬cess of telling one's own "giving stories" and encourag¬ing one another is at least as important.

Resources for Cultivating Stewardship Communities
The Center for Parish Development is an ecumenical, missional, research, consulting, and teaching agency founded by a consortium of mission agencies, theological seminaries, and regional church bodies.
The mission of the Center is to discover how the church in general and the local church in particular can learn to discern and participate in God's mission more faithfully and effectively, and to provide counsel and resources to facilitate that transformational process.
The Center carries out this mission by forming dynamic learning partnerships in which the church's life and mission are brought into conversation with theological and organizational systems research, and by sharing with others what we learn in these partnerships.

If you'd like some assistance in calculating proportional giving, here are two valuable tools. Either or both may be helpful in considering the financial commitment you believe is appropriate.
The first calculates percentages of your total income, making it easy to figure how much to contribute on a regular basis
The second makes it possible to determine what proportion/percentage of total income you are currently contributing through the church.

The Call to Dispossession (Matthew 19:16-22)
Purdy begins the essay by writing: "Jesus holds a first mortgage on all that you and I possess. We own it and we have the use of it, just as we possess and inhabit houses on which the bank or savings and loan holds a first mortgage. But at any moment Jesus may call us to dispose of our possessions in order to benefit some person or cause that needs our support. Just as the bank may choose to foreclose, so Jesus has a claim on all we possess. To be called to be a disciple of Jesus is to acknowledge this claim on our money, houses, barns, lands, silver, clothes, cars, stocks, jewels, antiques, and collectibles. Such is the teaching of Jesus' encounter with the rich young man. Let us examine the story in some detail."
How, when or does Jesus call us to dispossess all we have?

Stories To Tell & Gifts To Share
Ask people what God is doing in their lives and you're likely to get many stories about what God has done for, with and through them. Augsburg Fortress has introduced a new stewardship series called "Stories To Tell & Gifts To Share," which is designed to guide people to "a deeper understanding of God's story as they tell their own faith stories, and respond to God's blessings by sharing God's gifts with the world," according to Augsburg.

In Giving I Connect with Others
On the NPR radio show, ALL THINGS CONSIDERED Isabell Allende tells her story which begins like this:
"I have lived with passion and in a hurry, trying to accomplish too many things. I never had time to think about my beliefs until my 28-year-old daughter Paula fell ill. She was in a coma for a year and I took care of her at home, until she died in my arms in December of 1992...Give, give, give -- what is the point of having experience, knowledge or talent if I don't give it away? Of having stories if I don't tell them to others? Of having wealth if I don't share it? I don't intend to be cremated with any of it! It is in giving that I connect with others, with the world and with the divine. It is in giving that I feel the spirit of my daughter inside me, like a soft presence."

The Stewardship Page by Ted Mollegen
Stewardship is being in charge of something that belongs to someone else. It implies an accountability to the true owner for what we do with what we are in charge of. Jesus taught in many parables that we are responsible to God for our use of what we are in charge of. He also taught that we owe the owner (i.e. God) a return on what has been assigned to us. Examples of things that we may be in charge of -- perhaps temporarily -- include:
ourselves,
our material resources,
our children,
our portions of business, church, or other organizations, etc.
