11-17-2009     Money and Mission
This week Bishop Will Willimon reminds us that the most important reason why people give is mission. "People want to make the world a better place to live," Willamon said. "People want to be a part of something that changes lives." Willimon invites us to consider how we talk about our mission when we ask for support. Our churches are changing lives and it's important to celebrate that in our stewardship campaigns.

9-29-2009     Passing Through the Needle's Eye
The most direct and troublesome money text in the Bible is the story of the young, rich ruler in Mark who asks Jesus how he can inherit eternal life. Jesus' response prompts us to ask, "What does it mean that a camel can more easily go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God?"

The following three authors offer different perspectives on the role money plays in our spiritual health and growth.

The second source is a Bible study by Arland Hultgren that examines biblical themes on stewardship.

Most of our stewardship talks and sermons about giving are immediately mentally filed under, "they're asking me for money" because the audience hasn't yet reached the spiritual understanding of why they are sitting in the church that day.

6-23-2009     The King's Loaves
God is the giver of all bread. We are bread for one another when we welcome a stranger and when we walk with someone through an illness...We are bread for one another when we teach and when we forgive. And finally, we are bread for one another when we share the bread we have been given.
6-16-2009     When Money Speaks, Truth is Silent
Why is it that when money speaks, truth is silent? The problem is idolatry. We see our images as things that can be molded by our money. In contrast to the U.S. economy, God's economy is one of mutual abundance and the promise of a full and plentiful life lived in community. The goal of Christian stewardship should be the cultivating of a church that is a community of faith living out its mission and vision according to God's economy and God's abundance."
