In January 2001, members of St. Luke Lutheran Church were surprised to leave worship with envelopes of cash. Tom Kidd, a pastor of St. Luke who suggested the project, built his sermon around the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30) in which a master distributes "talents" to his three workers. They return them -- two having made a better investment than the third. "For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance ...," the master says.
