Computer Services

Topics on this page:

For more information on the following services, contact Computer Services at 651-641-3462, Northwestern Hall 110E (lower level behind the Business Office), or email us at helpdesk@luthersem.edu. The Computer Services Web page also has more information on these services.

LutherNet Accounts

All registered students are given a LutherNet account which includes email. Your Luther Seminary email account (required for campus announcements) is accessible via Outlook on campus, the Web, IMAP, and POP3. Your login is also necessary to access all campus computers and the campus Intranet. You will receive information about your account with your advisor notification letter.

All campus announcements and campus-related personal e-mail will be conducted via your Luther Seminary email account. It is the student’s responsibility to check this account regularly.

Computer Labs

We have 52 computers available for student use on campus. Log in with your LutherNet username and password. 12 - Computer classroom in SE corner of Bockman Hall basement (available as student lab when classes or seminars are not in session)

Network Drive Space

When you log in to campus computers, 50 Megabytes of network drive space are available in your Microsoft desktop "My Documents" folder. It is backed up nightly. To access these files from home or anywhere across the web you will need to use the HomeDrive. Your preferences are also located in this space and follow you as a roving profile.

HomeLab

This is a server that allows you to open a lab computer session within Internet Explorer on an internet-connected PC from anywhere in the world. (Macintosh users please note: Microsoft does not support some older Macs on this feature. See our web site for minimal system requirements.) All standard software on our lab computers actually runs on the HomeLab server and only the screen is transmitted, making this usable even over a slow modem or computer. Check out our web page for more information on HomeLab.

HomeDrive

To access the HomeDrive click here and log in with your LutherNet login. With Home Drive you have access to your personal folder on LutherNet servers. This is the same folder as your H:/ drive when working on campus computers. You can upload or download your files from any computer connected to the Internet.

Password Changing

Your initial password is your student number, which is personal, but certainly not secure. Consequently, you should change your password to make it your own. When logged in to a lab computer, press control-alt-delete and choose Change Password, or use our web-based utility at http://www.luthersem.edu/intranet/. Click on Change Password in the upper right area of the page.

Free(ish) Software!

We now have an agreement with Microsoft which entitles all registered students to upgrade to any version of Windows or Office. Access to this software is changing. For the latest instructions, please see our Computer Services web site.

Microsoft Office CDs for sale

Another part of our agreement allows all students to buy a licensed copy of Office for $10, plus $3 if we package and mail it to you. You may only use this offer once, so we recommend you do it when you are graduating or leaving Luther Seminary. You can purchase it anytime after you start taking classes. Don’t pass up this really good opportunity.

Norton Anti-Virus

Once a year at the start of the fall session we offer NAV with a one-year subscription for updates for $5 for the license and CD checkout, $10 for distance learners where we have to mail this to you, no return necessary. Watch your e-mail for details.

Get Connected!

For students living on-campus. You have Ethernet! It is 20 times faster than a modem. Bring your computer in to us and we’ll set it up in three days or less. Network cards are available at cost. There is also a handout for self-help and info on our Computer Services web site.

We also offer a service for modem setup to our dialup with a 3-day turnaround. We have two modem models available at cost.

Wireless

We now have wireless coverage for the public areas on campus. There is no housing area coverage and it’s not planned at this time. If you have wireless on your laptop and set for automatic connection it should work automatically in the covered areas. We will install a wireless card on your computer for our cost of the card (currently about $60). Bring in your laptop for a card installation and we’ll set it up in three days or less. Please see our web site for more details and coverage or call the Help Desk. Most classrooms and indoor public areas are covered.

Dialup

We have our own digital dial-up service for $60 per year ($5/mo). Subscriptions are annual from September to August. If you start during the year, we’ll prorate the service through August so everyone renews in September. There are no refunds. This is really a good deal. For more information, see our Computer Services web site.

Firewall for student residences

Firewall rules are consistent campus wide. Internet services will work automatically with a few exceptions (MSN Zone and NetMeeting.) Call us if you are having trouble at 651-641-3462.

Outlook

Microsoft’s groupware application, Outlook, is available on all lab computers, the HomeLab and through our dial-up. It is the most robust and convenient way to read and compose email. It also gives access to our global address book, personal contacts (address book), a fully featured calendar, and a task list. To set it up, see our page with detailed instructions for setting up Outlook.

Student Web Sites

We are no longer accepting applications for student web sites.  However, there are many low-cost or free options for students at these hosting companies.

Computer Help Site

Some help for these resources is found on our Computer Services web site. If you would like to see something added, email the helpdesk at helpdesk@luthersem.edu or call our Help Desk at 651-641-3462. We are located in Northwestern Hall 110E (lower level behind the Business Office).

Electronic Communications Policy

Luther Seminary is committed to responsible use of e-mail and the Internet. See the Policy Section later in this handbook for the full text of our Electronic Communications Policy.
