Medical Insurance

Participation in the Seminarian Health Insurance Plan is required of all students registered for 3.0 or more credits in fall semester and/or spring semester. Students who can provide documentation of other group coverage (as defined below) may waive participation in the Seminarian Health Insurance Plan coverage, but will pay an annual $250 waiver fee.

New students will find an insurance ID card in their packets. Drug cards will be mailed to you mid-October.

Waivers

Students who waive seminarian coverage because they have other coverage are not entitled to secondary coverage under the plan. All students with an eligible waiver must complete a waiver form and return it to the Business Office. Once the waiver request has been submitted the first semester a student is enrolled, the waiver form will continue in effect until such time that a student chooses to move on to the Seminarian Health Insurance Plan. The waiver fee of $250, however, will be assessed annually. The requirement to sign waivers annually was recently eliminated. The information in this section supersedes the information on health insurance waivers found in the academic catalog.

“Other group coverage” is defined as coverage provided by:
1) Spouse’s current or former employer;
2) Parents’ current or former employer;
3) Student’s current or former employer;
4) An affiliated educational institution of a seminary;
5) Medicare or Medicaid.

Since they are not group plans, individual insurance policies and high risk state-pooled health plans do not qualify as an eligible waiver from the seminarian health plan.

Plan premiums

The annual seminarian plan premiums for 2006-2007 (coverage from 9/1/06 through 8/31/07) will be:
• Student $2871
• Waiver fee (not pro-rated) $250

Seminarians may purchase coverage for their dependents by contacting the ELCA Account Manager as shown in the box on this page. The premium for the 2005-2006 year (the most recent rates available) for a spouse is $3110 and for children (one or more) is $1988.

Those awaiting a call may extend this insurance plan for twelve months after completing their studies. This coverage may be purchased on a quarterly basis by completing the enrollment form. Checks and or credit card payment must be sent with the enrollment form for the insurance to be put in force. Students on Internship should contact the Business Office about their coverage.
