Apartment Furnishings

Each apartment is a self-contained unit and is
equipped with a range, a refrigerator, disposal and kitchen fan.
Each unit in Burntvedt Court has its own gas
furnace, air conditioning unit, and electric water heater. The
Fulham, LDR and Sandgren buildings are equipped with a central
heating system.
Blinds are furnished for all windows in Burntvedt
Court and Sandgren. These have been chosen in a neutral shade and
will blend with any color scheme or decor. They will be cleaned at
the seminary's expense on a schedule set up by the managers, so you
should not remove them.
Changing of blinds is NOT permitted.
Carpets should be vacuumed frequently and normal
care taken to prevent excessive soiling or staining. Contact the
manager or head resident for any information or assistance you may
need.
Kitchen Appliances

Stainless steel sinks need to be cleaned only with
detergent as a general rule. At times, a light rubbing with
non-abrasive cleanser may be needed to brighten the surface.
The kitchen range needs consistent care in order to
be in good working order. The broiler pan should be cleaned
thoroughly after each use, and the oven should be cleaned regularly.
The stove is one item that will receive special
scrutiny by the Head Resident at checkout time.
Report any grease fires or other damage to your
resident manager immediately. Our insurance carrier insists on early
and accurate claim reporting.

The disposals are not of the weight to handle
celery, olive pits, fruit pits, glass, or bones of any size.
Rhubarb, pea or bean pods, beet greens, corn husks, celery and
carrot tops, or potato peels cannot be put
into the disposal. Fat or grease cannot be put
into the disposal or any other drain.
Trash Disposal

Dumpsters for Burntvedt are located at the northwest
and southeast corners of the complex. Sandgren has a compactor unit
with a trash chute located in the northwest corner of the building,
near the elevator on each floor. Cardboard boxes and other large
items should not be put down this chute, as they can become lodged.
Furniture cannot be disposed of on campus. Items in
good condition can be taken to Goodwill (except damaged upholstered
items and mattresses). Other items must be taken to a landfill site.
Pick-ups can be arranged by calling a rubbish company; they will
charge a fee for this service.
Recycling

The recycling area for Sandgren and Burntvedt is
located in the same enclosure as the large trash dumpster at the
southeast corner of Burntvedt. Large containers are placed there for
newspaper, glass (clear, green, and brown), magazines, and cans.
There are no containers for corrugated cardboard, or plastics, but
cardboard can be folded flat and left in the enclosure and plastics
may be placed in the cans containers.
Tires and motor oil MAY NOT be
placed either in the trash dumpsters or the recycling area. They
must be disposed of at a service station.
Fire Extinguishers and Smoke Detectors

Each apartment in Burntvedt Court is furnished with
a fire extinguisher. Carefully read the instructions printed on the
cylinder so that you will be prepared for an emergency. If the dial
on the extinguisher indicates other than "normal," report this at
once to your resident manager.
All apartments are furnished with a smoke detector.
The Fire Inspector has advised us to make three unannounced smoke
detector checks each year.
Care and Use of Apartments

You will be responsible for the day-today care of
the apartment and the equipment therein. You are responsible for
damage within your unit. A reasonable amount of wear and tear is to
be expected, but unusual breakage, damage and cleaning will be
charged to you.
DO NOT REMOVE attached fixtures in the apartment
such as doors, blinds, etc.
Do not install ceiling hooks.
Do not use nails or screws on any doors.
Do not use adhesives on doors or walls.
Please attach door decorations on the wall next to
the door. LDR residents need to contact the Housing Office if they
wish to have a window air conditioner. The seminary must install the
unit to insure proper installation. There is a $15 charge for the
installation.
Freezers and portable dishwashers are permitted in
the apartments; clothes washing machines and dryers are not
permitted.
Waterbeds are permitted in the apartments with proof
of proper insurance. Waterbed coverage is available as a rider on a
renter’s insurance policy. Coverage needs to be in the amount of
$100,000. Copy of rider must be in the student file in the Housing
Office. Estimated cost for the rider is approximately $30/year.
You should purchase your own drain plunger to be
kept in your apartment for toilet and sink drain stoppage. Do not
put Drano or chemicals in the disposal. If the plunger does not
correct the problem, call the resident manager.
No painting, paper hanging or other physical
alterations will be permitted. Apartments will be renovated by the
maintenance staff as needed for proper care of the property.
No tape of any kind is to be used on walls or
cupboards. Do not use adhesive coverings in cupboards or on bathroom
shelves.
The counter tops should be cleaned only with soap
and water. No abrasive cleaners should be used. Avoid leaving
spilled fruit and vegetable juice, coffee or tea on counter tops
since these may cause stains. Hot pans, hot ovenware, or hot irons
will permanently damage these counter tops. A good detergent
solution such as professional formula Soilax is recommended to
remove marks from cupboards and walls.
The bathroom wall tiles and grout lines around the
tub need to be kept clean and free from mildew. Mildew grows and
sends roots into the grout lines, weakening them and allowing water
to penetrate. There are several good cleaners available at any
store.
Maintenance Requests and Complaints

Requests and/or repairs should be directed to the
manager, 641-3599. Furnace or air conditioner malfunction should be
reported immediately. Do not try to fix these yourself.
We will call repair persons on weekends and holidays only in
emergency situations because of the doubletime charges.
Complaints by the residents of all Student Family
Housing apartments should be directed to the Housing Director.
Storage

Burntvedt apartments on first floor level are
supplied with storage bins in the 1598 building behind the laundry
room. The second and third floor apartments (excluding building
1578) have their own interior storage closets. Residents of building
1578, second and third floors, share storage closets in their
stairwell.
Each apartment in Burntvedt and Sandgren is assigned
one storage bin in the basement of Sandgren (4x4x8).
Bicycles may be stored in a designated hallway
storage area of Sandgren: otherwise, there must be nothing
left in the hallways. No flammable liquids or internal combustion
engines (lawn mowers, boat motors, scooters, etc.)
are allowed in the storage bins.
Fulham Apartment storage bins are available in the
basement for each apartment. Items are not allowed to be left in any
public hallway or stairwell. Residents must provide their own locks
for their storage bins. The fire inspector has informed us that
charcoal must be stored in airtight metal
containers to prevent spontaneous combustion.
DO NOT STORE ANYTHING IN THE FURNACE ROOM OF YOUR
APARTMENT. This is a precaution against fire that
must be observed. A fire hazard is anything
left stored outside of bins. All items except bicycles must be in
your bin.
Pianos, Typewriters, Television, and Stereos

Pianos should not be placed tight against the wall
and, if possible, not against a common wall.
When typewriters (or computer printers) are in use,
place them away from the wall.
TV and stereo sounds should not disturb your
neighbors.
