Metro Area Culture

The Twin Cities area is a cultural and recreational center for the upper Midwest, alive with things to see and do. There are numerous theaters, sports events, movie theaters, parks, lakes, museums, university and college events, etc.

Musically, there are the Minnesota Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Opera, and various special concerts throughout the year. Several good dance companies grace the Twin City stages. Theater entertainment ranges from full dramatic productions at the Guthrie Theater to sophisticated satire served up at the Dudley Riggs' Theaters. For a change of pace, there is a conservatory and a small zoo in Como Park, just two miles from the seminary, which is free of charge. Bicycle enthusiasts can pedal for almost 100 miles along parkways all within the immediate metro area. For the gourmet, there are many excellent restaurants.

There are also numerous celebrations and festivals held throughout the year in and around the urban area. The Minneapolis Aquatennial is held in July; the Minnesota State Fair, one of the largest of its kind and within walking distance of the seminary, occurs at the end of August. The St. Paul Winter Carnival is held in January, and the Minnesota Renaissance Festival is held weekends from the middle of August through September. Check the front section of the telephone Yellow Pages for dates and locations.

For detailed information on what is happening in the Twin Cities, check the "Arts and Entertainment" sections of the Sunday Minneapolis Star Tribune or the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the University of Minnesota Daily, the bulletin boards by the Information Desk (Campus Center), the Northwestern Commons area, the Student Resource Center, The Connection, or any telephone pole in the area.

Mobility

Luther Seminary is well situated to take advantage of local bus routes. Route information, a route map, and schedules are available at the Information Desk. The Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC) information number is 827-7733. The "Yellow Pages" is the best source of information on taxi, train, and airplane service.
