Tomorrow's Professor Blog
has a great article listing the worst mistakes teachers can make in the classroom. It's an insightful (and research-driven) article. We talk often at Luther about some of the big-picture mistakes, like not having
learning-objectives in mind in course design
. Yet (from both a former student and a learning design point-of-view) I found some of the "smaller" listings here helpful as well, especially on a day-to-day teaching level.
"Mistake #10

Today, Boing Boing posted a great little music video of Meet the Elements, a new song by They Might Be Giants. This is a great little educational ditty which makes excellent use of song and images to teach about the Periodic Table.

Here is
praise from an internationally known biblical scholar, for two websites built by Luther Seminary's gifted bible faculty. I know we're Minnesotans, and as such don't call attention to ourselves, but good work should be shared!

Sometimes it feels to me like I'm at the end of a firehose of information, with so many new kinds of websites coming online that I hardly know where to look first. Fortunately the
American Association of School Librarians
publishes a list of the "
best 25 websites for teaching and learning
." You may think that because the AASL is oriented towards school libraries that they wouldn't have much to offer theological schools -- but you would be wrong!
Our Story

It's a classic, because it's so well done.

Here's an entire "
survival guide" to e-learning, available free via a pdf at
the author's site. I found pages 36 and following particularly rich, for the description of varieties of learning styles (complete with links to online learning style quizzes). There is much in here that will benefit people who are new to learning online -- and some of the rest of us, as well!

While poster presentations are as fashionable in the theological academy as they are in the sciences, however, if you find yourself with the opportunity to present one,
Swarthmore College
has put together some
design and presentation tips
for your poster.
The best general advice I can give a first-time poster constructor is to describe the circumstances in which a poster will eventually be viewed: a hot, congested room filled with people who are there primarily to socialize, not to look at

IA TV
posted an interview with
Sol Sende
r who was one of the people who helped develop the logo for the Obama campaign. It is an interesting look at how logos are developed and the level of intentionality that is built into a design.
Sender discusses how this design went viral with folks vamping, modifying, and using the design in many applications. In this case we can see how good design facilitated the sharing of ideas and gathering people around a cause. How might good design help Luther
