Lisa Lamb Wins Word & World Essay PrizeLisa W. Lamb, a Ph.D. candidate in practical theology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, has been named the 2007-2008 winner of the annual Word & World Essay Prize for Doctoral Candidates. Word & World: Theology for Christian Ministry is the quarterly journal published by the faculty of Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota. Lamb’s winning essay, “To Remember Well Together,” reflects the homiletical emphasis of her doctoral work and will appear in the journal’s Fall 2008 issue. In her essay, Lamb examines how memory functions to shape community among ethnic groups and how preaching can engage the memories of different groups now gathered in a Christian congregation. “The preached word,” she argues, “can form [congregations] into vibrant communities of memory that are capable of the disciplines of forgiveness, hospitality, and love that make ethnic reconciliation possible.” Lamb’s essay emerged as the winner from a large group of entries submitted by doctoral candidates in religion and theology from major seminaries and universities across the nation. In addition to having her essay published, Lamb will receive a cash prize of $1000. Lisa Lamb holds a B.A. degree in classics from the University of California at Santa Cruz and an M.A. in theology from Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Centre, Massachusetts. At Fuller Seminary, she earned an M.Div. degree before entering the Ph.D. program, which she plans to complete in June 2008. Her doctoral mentor, Dr. Clay Schmit, regards her as a “fine scholar with remarkable talent”; her dissertation is entitled “The Theology and Sociology of Remembering Together: A Homiletic for Multi-Ethnic Congregations.” While at Fuller, Lamb, who is beginning the ordination process with the Presbyterian Church, USA, has served as a teaching assistant and adjunct faculty member in homiletics. At that school, she has been the recipient of the Menlo Park Scholarship and the Fuller Women’s Legacy Award. Before moving to Fuller, Lamb worked with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship on many college campuses and in 2000-2001 was IVCF area director for campus fellowships throughout the city of Boston. She is the author of “Getting in on the Act: An Evangelical Dialogue with the Performance School in Homiletics,” published in Proceedings of the American Homiletics Academy in December 2005. Lamb is a member of the Academy of Homiletics of America and the American Academy of Religion. She is married and the mother of two children. The annual Word & World Essay Prize for Doctoral Candidates was designed by the journal’s editorial editorial board to provide incentive for doctoral candidates to write directly for the Christian church during a time in their careers when their work is generally focused more specifically within the academic world.
