Greetings Luther Seminary Contextual Learning Students:
As President Steinke underscored in her community announcement yesterday, we are prepared to share a number of recommendations and guidelines for continuing your contextual engagement wisely in the coming days.
During this time of a global pandemic, it is critical that we as citizens and leaders in the church exercise prudence and caution in our ministry practices. We advise that all Luther Contextual Learning students abide by National, State, and Local Health official’s directives’, particularly the practice of distancing oneself from others to avoid the spreading and sharing of the Corona-19 virus.
Whether you are engaged in contextual work in Christian public leader, clinical pastoral education, or internship we are advising that you abide by these precautionary measures and rather than engage in onsite face-to-face contact, develop and focus on ways to serve your neighbor in relational and spiritual support.
Bishop Ann Svennungsen, ELCA Bishop in the Minneapolis Area Synod makes a helpful distinction regarding the term “social distancing.” She suggests that we are actually practicing physical distancing, but not refraining from spiritual and relational support for one another as communities….for we are all members together as the Body in and of Christ. May this be the presence through which we lead in our communities in the days and weeks ahead.
The Contextual Learning office will continue to support you in your contextual learning. The following are expectations from Luther Seminary:
- Students will continue in their contextual site and receive the compensation consistent with any current placement commitment.
- Students will work with supervisors to follow social distancing guidelines, including ministry which continues to support congregations and communities in alignment with health guidelines.
- Any student who is included in the CDC vulnerable group is to work with the CL office on any specific change in their contextual learning requirements.
Continue these activities:
- Know where to find local information on COVID-19 and local trends of COVID-19 cases.
- Know the signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and what to do if you or those you come in contact with become symptomatic.
- Review, update, or develop workplace plans to include:
- Teleworking plans and policies.
As the Luther Seminary campus moves to online modalities for course offerings in the Spring semester, some notes for each of our contextual courses:
Christian Public Leader (CPL):
-
- Residential students accustomed to meeting in NW100 and/or your formation group meetings will now be exclusively using zoom. Watch for the zoom link for both of these elements of your course.
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE):
-
- ACPE has provided a COVID-19 response plan for all of their CPE educators. They, too, are wisely advising strict limitations on distancing practices and are creating alternative means for accomplishing their educational program goals for clinical hours and small group time. Please consult with your local CPE educator.
Internship—Standard program and MDivX program:
-
- All internships, whether in the standard or MDivX programs continue to learn in context through adaptive practices for these less than ordinary times.
- Examples of pastoral care at a distance include: online or telephone pastoral care visits, online devotional and sermon, handwritten notes, and more.
- Examples of teaching at a distance include: online teaching, small group learning sessions, recording teaching moments, and more.
- Spring Internship Cluster Retreats: please consult with the regional seminary responsible for facilitating the retreat you plan to attend.
-
-
-
- Region 1 and Region 3 Spring retreats (Luther Seminary facilitated): watch for an update on spring retreats within a week.
