A short update and a book recommendation.
Thank you for the many responses to my column last month on the issue of interns and administration of the sacraments. I have had (and continue to have) lively conversations with interns, former interns, pastors and bishops. I've drafted a letter to our partner bishops in Regions 1 and 3 seeking their wisdom. I'll report back with a more complete response in due time.
For now, just know the conversation is rich, about central aspects of our shared work, and ongoing. Be in touch if you have further thoughts!
Here is a book recommendation you may enjoy.
Pastoral Supervision: A Handbook by Jane Leach and Michael Paterson. SCM Press. 2010. 226 pages. $26 paperback/$15 digital.
Jane is a Methodist minister and directs theological formation for seminarians at Cambridge University in England. Michael is an Episcopalian priest and Director of the Institute of Pastoral Supervision and Reflective Practice. They are both outstanding leaders and teachers in this crucial area of ministry formation. I highly recommend their book, and think it might be especially fruitful for supervisors and students to read and discuss together.
