Join us Feb. 2 for the Andrew S. Burgess Lecture in Global Mission.
This annual lecture is an ongoing effort to introduce leading scholars in global mission to the Luther Seminary community. The Burgess Lecture is made possible by a fund established in honor of the life and work of Andrew S. Burgess, former missionary, missionary executive and professor of missions at Luther Seminary.
This year’s speaker is Elieshi Ayo Mungure, a 2007 graduate of Luther Seminary with a Ph.D. in pastoral care and counselling with a focus on conflict transformation in the family. Mungure is an ordained theologian from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, where her work as a parish pastor led to a call by the Lutheran World Federation to serve as a secretary for Africa.
Mungure will lecture on “The Global Nature of the Reformation: Why Africa’s Contribution Matters.” This lecture will examine the way reformation happened in Africa, including the loss of African culture through colonization and the gaining of other values through theological exploration. The lecture will discuss how communities in Africa today are working to rediscover what was lost and participate in the global new reformation movement.
The Burgess Lecture is part of the 2016 Mid-Winter Convocation. The theme of that event is Translating the Reformation: Martin Luther as Pastoral Theologian for Today.
