Student Voice: Graduate Preaching Fellowship Opens New Worlds for Mark Williamson, ’05
¡Saludos en Cristo from Mexico City! Although I graduated from Luther with an M.Div. in 2005, as recipient of the 2005-2006 Graduate Preaching Fellowship I remain a student of sorts, at least until the end of July. Thankfully, I get to share in this endeavor with my spouse, Leslie, an ELCA Horizons intern at Iglesia Luterana del Buen Pastor, a bilingual congregation in the northwest part of the Federal District.
Did You Know…?
… that many of Luther Seminary’s students cite attending or working at a church camp as crucial in encouraging their call to lay or ordained ministry? In a recent survey of Luther students, 68 percent of the 236 respondents attended a church camp, and of that number, nearly half said that attending camp was a factor in their call discernment.
Associate Director for Admissions Liza Okan visited several Bible camps this summer, meeting with camp counselors and workers, and answering their questions about seminary and church vocation. Luther Seminary Names New Seminary Pastor
Along with the many first-year students on campus this fall, Luther Seminary welcomes another new face, the Rev. Dr. John Martin Mann, who has accepted the call as seminary pastor. Mann has over 30 years of pastoral experience including campus ministry and launching two outreach ministries—Iglesia Luterana La Trinidad and Red Door Outreach Mission, both in Canton, Ohio. A graduate of Duke University Divinity School, Mann currently serves as senior pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Canton.

136 Graduate at 137th Commencement Ceremony
The day was hot, but that didn’t diminish the spirits of the 136 graduates who received their degrees at Luther Seminary’s 137th commencement ceremony, May 28. These new leaders have been called as Christian witnesses into the world that God loves.
From the President: Called & Sent Campaign a Tremendous Success
Five years ago Luther Seminary launched an ambitious comprehensive fundraising campaign to raise $96.7 million.
As of June 30, the Called and Sent campaign has come to a close. Thanks to the tremendous support of our donors–over 10,000 strong–preliminary numbers show we raised $110 million! And we increased our donor base by over 40%! This support demonstrates the deep commitments of our alums and friends to the seminary’s mission. Thank you, donors. And thanks be to God!
The Called and Sent campaign was announced just two months before 9/11. The temptation was to say, “Let’s be more conservative. People are uncertain. This isn’t the time to start the largest capital campaign in the school’s history.”
Key trustees and donors strongly urged the seminary to stay the course. They said the world needed what Luther Seminary offers now more than ever.
